L'enfant et les sortilèges
(The Child and the Spells)

2019

L'enfant et les sortilèges is an opera in one act by Maurice Ravel that premiered in 1925. It is a fantasy opera that was originally intended to be a complete opera but was modified to be an opera in one act that retained the ballet elements.

At Colorado State University it was directed by Dr. Tiffany Blake and conducted by Chris Crans. Thomas Grassia gave particular attention to being respectful of the styles of dance used, while simultaneously pushing into the absurdity and innocent humor that the operetta portrays. Multiple styles of dance were incorporated including tango, a soft-shoe tap inspired dance, interpretive dance, modern dance, and contemporary.
