Perceptions
2022
Perceptions is Thomas Grassia's second solo performance at CSU. The piece contemplates how dance can be distilled into silhouettes and shapes, presenting partial views of the choreography. This is akin to how we present a partial image of ourselves to those around us, as the people we pass by on the street catch a glimpse into our lives. In these fleeting moments, we often reveal only a fraction of our true selves. Perhaps we show strength and confidence to mask our vulnerabilities, or perhaps we see moments of weakness. But in doing so, we demonstrate the complexities and contradictions of human nature. Regardless, the piece challenges us to consider how we present ourselves to others and what it truly means to be seen and understood. Do people ever see beyond the facades we create to hide what we experience internally?
